I realize this is small potatoes politically but I live in Windsor and our dipshit tory mayor axed the Tunnel Bus which was the only way to get to Detroit without a private vehicle. Mayor just doesn’t want to pay unionized bus drivers but he faked concern about boosting the US economy. The new bridge they’re building (which would have pedestrian and cyclist access) forced a bunch of people out of their homes in working-class neighbourhoods but it has a land acknowledgement on the website. Lmao
“What I said regarding my veto of the tunnel bus amendment is that I do not want to subsidize people to go and spend money in a country that is attacking us economically,” Dilkens reiterated to the Star this week in an email. But even before Trump signed his tariff orders, Dilkens wanted to stop the bus. He sparked a community backlash earlier in January when he proposed a budget eliminating the service. Dilkens said his reason for killing the bus was a 2022 change to Canada’s Labour Code. It gives federal employees 10 days of paid annual medical leave on top of existing benefits. Since a few operators drive buses that cross the international border, all of Transit Windsor’s roughly 300 employees fall under federal labour laws. Dilkens said the added sick days mean the tunnel bus, which used to break even, now costs the city around $1.4 million annually. “The City of Windsor does not fund transit costs to any other jurisdiction within Essex County,” Dilkens said in his email to the Star. “The municipalities that receive those services pay the full cost. “It’s a little rich to think Windsor taxpayers should subsidize service to another country when we don’t do the same locally.” (x)

I’m still researching the detroit-windsor crossing. there used to be a truck ferry that existed to ship hazardous materials across the border bc the ambassador bridge and tunnel both ban hazmat. now you have to cross at port huron-sarnia if you’re carrying hazmat. which clears up a question I’ve had for a long time about why there’s a hydrogen fuel plant in sarnia. if it was closer to windsor they would still have to drive it up to sarnia to get it into the US

I'd really love to see a state passenger rail network here, like New Jersey or Ontario have, but given the political significance of the automotive industry I'm not holding my breath for anything. Our governor won twice on a campaign to "fix the damn roads" and people tend not to see the value of alternative transit methods, as much as Detroit and other midwestern cities desperately need them. We still have plenty of active trackage as you said, and the state already owns the old MI Central line and all of Lake State Railway's trackage, but somehow I consider it a miracle the state even still funds the Wolverine and Blue Water. That being said, at the very least a line from Toledo to Detroit, Lansing, and Grand Rapids (and further to Holland if we're really lucky) seems like a no-brainer for any person or agency with a modicum of interest in providing a decent public service.
One of the really unfortunate things here is that the tracks leading into downtown Detroit were removed, so even if we managed to get a decent suburban rail service it would still only be able to drop commuters off in mainly residential neighborhoods and business parks, and they'd have to either walk a rather large distance or use the (poorly run and infrequent) streetcar or (also in desperate need of improvements) bus system. Lansing and Flint both have similar problems, their stations being at the university campus and a suburban industrial zone respectively.
In an ideal world, we would be able to build a fairly extensive system not too different from Melbourne's here just by upgrading the tracks, building more stations in the suburbs, and digging a single train tunnel under Fort and Lafayette streets to connect directly to downtown.

But apparently even running a single commuter line to already existing stations on already upgraded tracks currently used by Amtrak is too much for MDOT to handle.
if the US could stop being so politically terrible to Canada I'd love to see more cross-border service, we used to take Via to Toronto every summer and it would be nice to be able to do that without having to drive to Windsor first, even if it would still involve transfers and border security.

We took the tunnel bus from Detroit to Windsor, ON! The driver absolutely ripped through the tunnel, that was the shortest international crossing I've ever experienced. https://ift.tt/bnOMqsr June 17, 2025 at 02:30PM

🚀 Reflections – Lessons, Wins & What’s Next
✅ International races hit different—crossing borders mid-run is surreal! ✅ Detroit’s course is dynamic—Mexicantown + Belle Isle were the top highlights. ✅ Next goal? Refining my marathon pacing & optimizing fueling strategy.
💡 This marathon was everything I hoped for—and now, it’s time to plan what’s next!

🔥 Looking Ahead – More Marathons, More Challenges!

Detroit-Windsor is the busiest freight crossing between the US and Canada, according to US Department of Transportation figures. “Our businesses really function as North American units, our economies are just so interlinked,” Beth Burke, chief executive of the Canadian American Business Council, tells me. Jim Farley, Ford CEO, has said tariffs could “blow a hole” in the US auto industry. But one frigid rush hour morning on the tunnel bus last week, commuters were mostly sanguine about future relations. Canadian Harvey Searle, 70, travelling to work at his brother’s roofing company in the US, brushes off “51st state” taunts. “It’s just the reality, we already are the 51st state,” he tells me, adding that threats of tariffs are “just talk”. The bus driver and another passenger concur.

1910 - Michigan - Rail Approach to The Michigan Tunnels
The Michigan Central Railway Tunnel is a railroad tunnel under the Detroit River connecting Detroit, Michigan, in the United States with Windsor, Ontario, in Canada. The U.S. entrance is south of Porter and Vermont streets near Rosa Parks Boulevard. The Canadian entrance is south of Wyandotte Street West between Cameron and Wellington Avenues. It was built by the Detroit River Tunnel Company for the Canada Southern Railway, leased by the Michigan Central Railroad and owned by the New York Central Railroad. The tunnel opened in 1910 and is still in use today by the CPKC Railway.

“Whisky Found In Car At Tube,” Border Cities Star. November 13, 1930. Page 06. --- Driver Sprints to Liberty; Catsup Bottle Centre of Span Trouble --- When an officer began probing the cushions of a dilapidated coupe at the Detroit exit of the tunnel with a hat pin, the driver of the coupe disappeared like a flash. The customs officials uncovered seven bottles of whisky in the back cushion. The car that was hurriedly left behind by its owner when the customs men became too inquisitive is valued at $5.
At the Ambassador Bridge terminus, a bottle of catsup resulted resulted in the detention of three former Hamtremck officials. The three arrested were Dr. Theodore T. Dysarz, former health officer of Hamtramck: Stanley J. Pacholex, former Hamtrameck police commissioner, and Casimir Zarzyka, a former Hamtramck councilor. Dr. Dysarz explained that one of the trip had packed a bottle of catsup in a hip pocket to fool the customs officers. The customs men found the catsup and also found a small bottle of whisky that the possessor had forgotten about. As a result the three men were kept in custody for about 12 hours, and the custom oficials had the last laugh.
